What Is a Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty refers to a surgical procedure that is designed to improve the appearance of the labia minora and in some cases, the labia majora. The goal is to reduce the size of overly large or prominent labia minora and/or majora. This can be used to reshape the labia, make them symmetrical, or remove excess tissue for a more refined appearance. The procedure can also reduce discomfort due to enlarged or prominent labia during activities such as exercise, intercourse, swimming, or even wearing tight clothing. This procedure can help our patients feel more comfortable in their own bodies.

Types of Labiaplasty Procedures

Most of the time, labiaplasty involves the reshaping of labia minora. The two frequently used techniques are the wedge technique and the trim technique. Both techniques are useful and can be used to improve unique shapes and anatomy.
The wedge technique removes extra labial tissue and avoids leaving a long scar along the edge of the labia and will hide the incisions in areas that are the least visible. Most of the time, these scars are nearly invisible after full healing.

The trim technique also removes extra labial tissue and can be useful for those with significant asymmetry between the two labia. It has benefits of a shorter procedure time but can leave a scar along the entire length of the labia.

Some women who have excess skin and tissue in the clitoral hood would benefit from a clitoral hood reduction, which is designed to reduce the excess tissue around the clitoris, thus creating more exposure of the clitoris and improving cosmetic appearance.
Women who have large labia majora can also undergo a reduction procedure, and this can typically be done at the same time as the labia minora reduction in order to achieve desired results.

Benefits

Labiaplasty offers many benefits to women who choose the procedure when it is performed in a safe setting by an experienced surgeon. These benefits may include:
  • Improved aesthetics with a refined, youthful appearance
  • Greater comfort during exercise and intercourse
  • Easier fitting of tight underwear and clothing
  • Increased self-confidence
  • Improved sexual pleasure

Who Is a Candidate?

Labiaplasty is an ideal procedure for women who have enlarged or asymmetrical labia minora due to genetics, childbirth, or other causes. It is also recommended for those who experience discomfort when wearing tight clothing or during intercourse. Optimal candidates will be in good health and be non-smoking (as these factors influence recovery and your final results). Those with any underlying medical issues in the area will need to be treated by their gynecologist first prior to pursuing the procedure. Additionally, it is crucial to have a healthy approach to the procedure and realistic expectations for what the procedure can and cannot do (which Dr. Min will fully explain during your consultation process).

An Overview of the Labiaplasty Procedure Experience

The labiaplasty procedure is an outpatient procedure, which usually takes about one to two hours with Dr. Min paying careful attention to meticulous details. Depending on whether you prefer to be awake or not during the entirety of the procedure, it can easily be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. A custom surgical plan will be in place for every shape and size of labia, and once the procedure is complete, you will be able to return home the same day.

After the Surgery: Recovery

After surgery, patients are encouraged to rest and take things slowly for the first few days. Patients may experience some soreness and burning sensation during this time, and applying icepacks to the area will help ease the discomfort. Swelling and bruising are also normal side effects, but they should mostly resolve within two to four weeks. Patients typically return to their regular activities in one to two weeks, except for sexual intercourse and cycling, which can resume six weeks after the procedure once proper healing has taken place.

Seeing Your Results

Patients can expect to see some of the results of their labiaplasty procedure immediately as the changes are fully made during the procedure. However, as the swelling gradually subsides, patients will experience improved aesthetics, comfort, and pleasure in the weeks following the surgery. With proper care and maintenance, these results should continue over time and be a permanent improvement to the treated areas. More importantly, for many patients, it allows them to feel more confident and to enjoy physical activities without self-consciousness about their bodies.

Combining a Labiaplasty With Other Procedures

In some cases, patients may choose to combine a labiaplasty with other procedures. This can help enhance their overall appearance and provide even more dramatic improvements to a sense of self-confidence. It is important to discuss all of your desired goals with your surgeon prior to the procedure in order to determine if combining different treatments would be your ideal approach.

Labiaplasty FAQs

How much does labiaplasty cost in Beverly Hills?

We know that hearing that the cost of labiaplasty varies can be an unsatisfying answer. However, as with any plastic surgery, each procedure involves a complex combination of factors that affect the final price. What we can guarantee is that you see a quality of service that reflects every dollar of the final cost. From board-certified anesthesiologists to a team of medical professionals in a state-of-the-art setting, we use the cost of the surgery to create a safe and positive experience for our patients.

Does labiaplasty tighten your vagina?

Labiaplasty only affects the external part of the female genitalia. No changes are made to any part of the internal tissues, including the entirety of the vagina. While procedures do exist that can address other tissues of the genitalia, Dr. Min’s procedure focuses exclusively on the labia minor. The outer labia are also left unaffected.

Are labiaplasty results permanent?

Labiaplasty results remain at their peak for years. While the changes are permanent, a few factors can impact how your results look as you age. Namely, weight fluctuations and pregnancy can have the most significant impact. However, any removed tissue will not grow back.

Will I enjoy my results? What if I do not?

Dr. Min ensures that she will give your procedure the time required to learn about your goals. Furthermore, she has the skill to craft outcomes that match patient goals and expectations. The key factor here: open communication with your surgeon. As a female labia surgeon with board certification, Dr. Min has both the understanding and skill to deliver results that meet or exceed expectations.

Additionally, Dr. Min provides labiaplasty to patients dissatisfied with the work of another surgeon. Revision surgery requires comprehensive skill, as she must work not only with natural tissues but also with any scarring that has occurred.

How does pregnancy affect labiaplasty?

While labiaplasty has no impact on your ability to become pregnant, pregnancy can impact your results. Giving birth places significant strain on the tissues of this area. However, giving birth does not necessarily mean your results will be undone. The effects will vary with each case, but revision procedure allows you to restore your results if you are affected.

Will the results look natural?

Dr. Min’s goal with any procedure is to adjust target tissues for results that look and feel natural. Incisions are placed to minimize visibility, using the natural creases and folds of the genitalia to obscure any scarring.
